Dance Medicine
As athletes and artists, dancers have very unique demands placed upon them. The ActivePT Dance Medicine program is designed to keep dancers dancing whether through injury prevention training or rehabilitation after an injury. At ActivePT we recognize the importance of understanding dance technique and terminology in order to provide dance-specific physical therapy services. Physical therapists are movement specialists trained to examine and treat muscle and joint dysfunction and analyze balance and movement patterns as related to physical performance. At ActivePT you will also have access to Rochester Athletic Club's state of the art Pilates Studio to help further accommodate your unique dancer needs.

Dance Injury Rehabilitation Program
The Dance Medicine Specialist begins by performing a thorough examination of your body, including muscle strength, flexibility, and poor movement patterns that may have contributed to your dance injury. A custom treatment program is then developed by the physical therapist to reduce your pain and start getting you back to your normal performance level. As a dancer herself, the program director will include correction of technique and alignment in your rehab program to decrease stress to your joints, help you return to dancing safely, and will likely even improve your technique in the end.

If you have a recent injury, ask about a no-fee screening appointment to help you determine the best next step to take for your specific injury.

Dance Injury Prevention: A Pre- or Post-Injury Program
Through this specialized program, the dancer will improve alignment and postural control and reduce biomechanical stress that could lead to injury.

Your individual Dancer Profile will include:
  • An individual posture and fitness assessment specifically designed for identifying problems that lead to poor dance technique
  • A biomechanical analysis of dance technique including an assessment of muscle strength, flexibility, and joint mobility that can all affect your skills
  • Recommendations that will help to prevent injury and correct imbalances
  • Your profile of results, in writing, to help you track your progress in the future
  • A set of dance related goals, customized based on your personal dance profile results

If you want to take your performance to the next level, consider enrolling in the Elite Dancer program. This program is designed for those who have completed the Dancer Profile, and wish to take their skills to the next level. This program is also great for those who have had multiple injuries or problems or those trying to reduce their risk for such injuries. The Elite Dancer enjoys one on one training sessions custom-tailored to your profile and dance related goals. Sessions progressively advance exercises that help to improve your core strength, posture, balance, and flexibility. The program utilizes Pilates-based principles with an emphasis on dance-specific exercise that only a dancer herself can offer.
