Fastpitch Softball Pitch Count

Home · Fastpitch Softball Pitch Count

The mechanics involved in the windmill pitch are quite unique, requiring a complex combination of mobility, strength, and coordination. Fastpitch softball is gaining popularity, with an estimated two million youth players participating in it each year. In 2028, fastpitch softball will make its comeback in the summer Olympic games in Los Angeles, California! Interestingly, as of the writing of this blog, a difinitive “pitch count” has not yet been established for fastpitch softball.

RECOMMENDED PITCH COUNT FOR SOFTBALL

With the growing participation in fastpitch softball, injury rates are now similar in softball and baseball, according to a publication by Hurley, Kibler, and Randolph in 2021. Although some guidelines have been proposed, there is no universally accepted approach for determining fastpitch softball pitch count. As a result, pitchers are often allowed to throw as many pitches as they desire.

Dale J. Buchberger, PT, DC, CSCS, DACBSP, has developed some general recommendations for fastpitch softball pitch count. For girls aged 8-10 years, 50 pitches per game are recommended. As the age increases, the number of pitches thrown per game should also increase. For girls aged 10-12, 65 pitches per game is recommended; for girls aged 13-14, 80 pitches per game; and for girls aged 15 and above, a limit of 100 pitches per game.

PITCH COUNT AND INJURY RISK

While some may argue that having no universally accepted pitch count limit can lead to overuse and injury for pitchers, others believe that it allows for more strategic and exciting gameplay. However, there are valid concerns about overuse and injury. In “Is it Time for Pitch Counts in High School Softball,” Hurley, Kibler, and Randolph point out that softball pitchers have three times the risk of getting injured compared to other positions. Therefore, softball pitchers with no pitch count limit must differentiate between fatigue and pain or discomfort. It is also essential to inform the coach of any symptoms. Seeking help quickly for pain can reduce the chances of missing future practices and games.
